This post is a mini-post under "Episode 33: Which 8th Generation game console should you buy in 2013?". If you want the full story, read that post before this one. I'm comparing the exclusive retail games available for the 8th generation of video game consoles as at the holiday season, 2013 .
In the 7th generation, it became common for game consoles to have downloadable-only games for smaller budget games so that indie developers like me can make games and sell them there. Maybe I'll write a post on the Playstation Network (PSN), Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA) or the Nintendo eShop one of these days. Games on those services typically cost $5-$10 and aren't nearly large enough to use all the space available on a Blu-ray Disc or HD DVD, so there's no need to make a physical copy of the game. When making a decision on which game console to buy, no one is likely to consider which console has the best library of low budget games so we won't be doing that here either. Besides, PSN and XBLA are available on the current gen sytems, so there's no need to get a next gen system if those are the main games you want to play. With that said, we will be considering only retail exclusives: Games you can buy a physical copy of on a particular system, but can't get that game on any of the other systems.
From the table, you will notice that three of the biggest blockbuster games you can get on the PS4 or Xbox One are already available on the current gen PS3 and Xbox 360, and only one of the 3 isn't available on the Wii U. The PS4 has 3 exclusive games, the Xbox One has 3 exclusives and the Wii U has 19 exclusives. The Wii U exclusives would drop to 13 if we decided to count those games on the Wii U that are also on the 3DS (Nintendo's portable console), but to be fair, the 3DS versions aren't identical to the Wii U versions, and if they were, it doesn't change the fact that the Wii U is the only 8th generation console that you can get those games on. Note that any game on the PS4 can be played on a Playstation Vita via remote play, as long as they're on the same wifi network.
In conclusion, if you're not into the kind of games that are exclusive to Nintendo's console, then it would probably be a good idea if you stick to your current gen console for this year, since they have versions of almost every good game that's on the next gen consoles.
